A TWO MINUTE STORM CAN CREATE A LIFE-TIME OF DAMAGE
The long-awaited heat of summer comes with its price: summer storms. While the usual rain, wind and flooding is common during the season, massive damage to your home is also caused by hail, lightning, and deadly tornados; all are possible — at once — and during intense summer storms can leave a path of destruction in a few moments time. Southern Loss Consultants‘ Rob Izzo has seen plenty of damage to homes brought on by hot weather and accompanying unstable weather conditions. He explains the damage to consider:
WHAT THE HAIL DOES–
Hail beats your roof and siding and can cause extreme cosmetic damage. It can break windows and outdoor fixtures, and destroy landscaping. It usually comes with lightning and even tornados. It can be as big as a softball or bigger.
LIGHTNING DOES STRIKE TWICE–
Lightning can hit multiple times in one area, causing instant destruction. It’s force is the equivalent of a bomb. It’s extremely difficult to predict or prevent, even with a lightning rod. It can electrocute on contact, but it can also cause damage that can go undetected, later causing fire. Power surges and outages from lightning generate a variety of hazards. The power of the electrical charge and intense heat can fry appliances, computers, and electric circuits. Pools of water and even appliances can be electrically charged. Lightning can cause splintering and fracturing of framing members, house structure, deck material, and the 2×6’s that support your roof. It can blow chimneys apart, take out boxing and overhangs on your roof, and the heavy rain that accompanies lightning can cause flooding. If it strikes, don’t assume that the only damage is that which you can see. Check for electrical damage before you put a full load on your circuit. Have an electrician check all outlets to insure they are carrying a proper electrical current. Central heat and air systems are also damaged by power surges. Call a qualified service technician to have yours checked if you experience a surge.
TORNADO’S BRUT FORCE–
In the blink of an eye, a tornado can wipe an entire city off the map. Tornado’s are unpredictable. One can take your neighbor’s house and not touch yours. Is your home built to withstand the force of a major tornado? Windows and sliding glass doors may have safety glass, but is the glass large-missile rated? A two by four from the house next door is a projectile during high winds. If you home is ten years old, or older, it’s not likely built to current codes. Just the partial impact of a tornado can twist your house off the foundation, even it looks okay, it can still be a total loss.
